Professional Experience

Being one of Singapore’s top litigators, Engelin was selected, in 1998, to become a Senior Counsel.

Ever since that day she continued to personally represent her clients in Singapore’s high-profile cases. Be it in an eye catching corporate dispute with a global fast-food franchise, in mind-boggling matrimonial cases or in newspaper headline reported criminal litigation.

Engelin’s forte is litigation, arbitration and mediation work. Being very meticulous, few colleagues would be able to outclass her with respect to financial analysis or investigating all legal aspects of corporate contracts and deals.

Enjoying decades long experience in court, she knows how to strategize her, and her lawyer’s cases to achieve the optimal result for the firm’s clients. Most of Engelin’s cases result in a win. Her moto is: always “under-promise and “over-deliver”.

Education

Engelin graduated from the University of Singapore in 1978 with an LLB (Hons) and was admitted to the Singapore bar in 1979. She was appointed Senior Counsel on 10 January 1998.

The appointment of Senior Counsel, Singapore’s equivalent of Queen’s Counsel in Britain, was made by the Selection Committee which includes the Chief Justice and the Attorney-General. Engelin has also been admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales

Notable Cases

A small sample of recent cases Engelin has personally been leading:

  • International commercial transactions to resolve land transactions for the purchase of two hotels surrounded by a golf course and local power plant
  • Matrimonial matters, including divorce, custody and maintenance claims and division of matrimonial assets
  • Banking claims with focus on financial products, mortgage claims, cheque forgery, loan recovery (collaterised and uncollaterised) and claims on trust receipts, letters of credit, guarantees, debentures and other forms of banking documentation

Active in Singapore’s Society: “Meet the People” sessions in West Coast GRC

Engelin is not only personally engaged in providing free legal advice to the constituency, she also committed all lawyers in the firm to attend on a rotating schedule.

“Meeting the people in the HDB-areas and listening to their legal problems and advising them how to cope” is a eye-opener”. That is what Engelin brings back from these sessions: not everyone is a high-flying millionaire. There are plenty of common people with every day problems that need to be addressed. “To help-out during these monthly sessions is only a small thing that we can do”, she explains.

Dear Ms. Teh,

May this kindness return to you a thousand fold .

Merry Xmas!

December 2020,

Dear Ms Teh and Sylvie,

A heartfelt thank you for all that you have done for me. I am very grateful to you and your law firm’s help. You have been a beacon of light that guided me out of the darkness and empowered me with strength and hope. Thank you so much for your help despite your busy schedule for prioritizing my case and putting your utmost effort into the submissions. Words cannot sufficiently express the gratitude I feel and my heart will never stop appreciating your generosity. I have made payment for the interim bill as indicated and attached is the document that shows the transfer of funds.

Hope you have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

With warmest regards,

Dear Engelin,

I called your direct line but you must be busy. I just wanted to personally thank you for the great job that you did as a mediator yesterday. My colleague was extremely impressed – we now have another good mediator that we can request for appointment in respect of our cases at SMC. Many thanks again!
